Executive Director

Brandon Davis, Ph.D is a licensed psychologist and the director for the mental health center. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University. An area of specialization is psychological testing for bariatric surgery and personality assessments.

 

Medical Staff
Laura Van Cleve, D.O. is a psychiatrist and the medical director at the mental health center. She is a doctor of osteopathy and a board certified psychiatrist with a background in biological psychiatry. Dr. Van Cleve's areas of specialization include psychopharmacology and adolescent and child psychiatry.

Casie Riney, PA-C is a physician assistant who attended Des Moines University where she received her Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies. She is certified by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants and licensed by the state of Iowa to practice medicine. She works in collaboration and as a team with her supervising physician, Dr. Van Cleve. She has worked at the Poweshiek County Mental Health Center since 2005. Although her areas of specialization are patients with depression and chronic mental illness, she treats all age groups and mental health diagnoses.

Sue Hopwood, R.N.C is a certified psychiatric nurse. She gets weights and takes blood pressures of all clients seen by Dr. Van Cleve and Casie. Sue receives and returns most of the phone calls for Dr. Van Cleve, answering medication questions and concerns. She also assists with medication refills and communicates with pharmacies and insurance companies about medication authorization.

 

Clinical Staff

Larry Anderson, LISW, ACSW, is a clinical social worker who has worked in mental health for over 25 years.  He received his BA in Social Work at the University of Northern Iowa and his Master in Social Work degree at St. Louis University.  He works half-time at the mental health center and is also in private practice in Ankeny and Newton.  His clinical interests include treatment of relationship problems, mood and anxiety disorders, personality disorders, co-occurring disorders, and serious and persistent mental illnesses.  He uses a variety of therapy approaches including cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, and interpersonal therapies.

Jana Brown, LMSW is originally from Chicago. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and Psychology from the University of Iowa and her Master’s Degree in Social Work from St. Ambrose University with a specialization in school social work. She worked at Lutheran Services of Iowa with children in foster care and at a nursing home where she met with residents, their families and the care center staff to discuss treatment plans and personal concerns, as well as discussed end-of-life issues with the families of hospice residents. Ms. Campbell worked as an Assistant Teacher with the Head Start Program for two years. She also interned as a school social worker for one year in the Rock Island/Milan School District. Ms. Campbell enjoys working with children, teenagers, young adults, and families. Her theoretical approach is based on a combination of systemic, client-centered, and strengths-based approaches.

Megan Hasenwinkel, PsyD is a licensed psychologist who has lived most of her life in Iowa and is an alumni of Drake University. She received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Indiana State University and has worked at the VA in Knoxville. She has interests in the areas of serious mental illness, logotherapy, motivational interviewing, as well as cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety and mood disorders. She also has interests in the areas of personality and intellectual assessment.

Jill Jordahl-Ball, PsyD began working at the center in August for a one-year post-doctoral position. She works with individuals from childhood through adulthood and also performs psychological evaluations and does outreach to the community. She is an Iowa native and an alumni of Grand View College. Her doctorate is in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University in Schaumburg, Illinois. She has a speciality in child and family psychology.  Her therapeutic orientation blends cognitive-behavioral therapy, logotherapy, and motivational interviewing. She has a strong interest in psychological evaluations including cognitive and personality assessments.

Jennifer Kauder, Ph.D. began working at the center in August 2009 for a one-year post-doctoral position.  She works with individuals of all ages, performs psychological evaluations, and provides outreach to the community.  Jennifer is originally from Cleveland Heights, Ohio and relocated to Iowa in 1997.  She earned her B.A. in Psychology with a concentration in Law and Society from Kenyon College, her M.A. in Psychology with a Clinical and Applied Emphasis from the University of Northern Iowa, and her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Iowa.  She utilizes an integrated theoretical approach reflecting components of cognitive behavioral, feminist, and psychodynamic theories. Her areas of interest/specialization include issues related to identity development, disability (including ADHD and learning disabilities), interpersonal relationships, family of origin, anxiety, and depression.


Kristin O'Conner-Sherrets, MA, NCC began her experience in the mental health field by working at a crisis center, where she provided crisis counseling and suicide assessment. She also worked as a facilitator for a support group of individuals who have lost loved ones to suicide. Kristin earned her B.A. degree in Psychology and English from Coe College in Cedar Rapids. She then went on to pursue an M.A. degree in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Northern Iowa, where she completed an internship working with students at the college counseling center. Kristin is especially interested in working with students on academic, social, and developmental issues, but she also enjoys working with adolescents, adults, and the geriatric population. Kristin's other areas of interest/specialization include issues related to depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, grief, sexual orientation, gender identity, and cultural diversity.

Myke Selha, LISW has worked in mental health for over 15 years. He earned a B.A. in Religious Studies and American Indian Studies from Iowa State University and an M.S.W. from the University of Iowa. He also completed a post-graduate residency in Pastoral Counseling and Psychotherapy. Myke’s approach combines the theoretical bases of systems, psychodynamic, bio-energetic, narrative and humor therapy. He is on the board of the National Association of Social Workers and a member of the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor. Myke’s areas of interest/specialization include issues related to: anxiety, depression, sexuality, gender identity, spirituality, and interpersonal relationships.

Travis Semmens, LMSW is a Licensed Master Social Worker. Travis 
graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in Psychology, and a 
Masters in Social Work. Travis has previously work on the south side 
of Chicago with large sibling groups in foster care, and at a PMIC 
residential facility. Travis specializes in seeing children, 
adolescents, families, and couples. Areas of interest for Travis are 
Reactive Attachment Disorder, and working with children exposed to 
trauma such as physical and sexual abuse.
 

Ren Stinson begins working at the center in August for a one-year post-doctoral position. He is a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and is a doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Iowa.  His specialties include depression, anxiety disorders, and multicultural issues surrounding race, gender, social class, and spirituality.  He also specializes in providing exposure therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder.  Ren's theoretical orientation integrates existential psychotherapy with cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness based approaches.

Alecia Sundsmo, PsyD is a licensed psychologist who serves as the College Services Director for the center, working exclusively with college students. She completed her B.A. in Psychology at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee and her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. She is a generalist practitioner who is trained to help students with a wide variety of concerns, though she has special interests in college student success and development, holistic health, diversity issues, and stress-related difficulties. She also provides educational and prevention-oriented presentations upon request.

 

Station Clubhouse Staff

Julie Andrews helps Clubhouse members through activities such as monitoring the medication compliance, money management, problem resolution, and providing them with transportation.

Julie Wendl is the director of the Clubhouse. She is involved in developing programming for Clubhouse members, conducting group psychoeducation, and leading the Clubhouse Advisory Council.

 

Administrative Staff

Mike Maggert, Ph.D. is the Office Manager. Dr. Maggert has degrees in business administration, finance, and health care management.

Kimberly Clute does the billing for the center and answers phones, schedules appointments, and collects co-pays.


Ann Standerwick is the mental health center's transcriptionist. She is also responsible for filing paperwork, greeting clients, scheduling appointments, and answering phones.


Mary Steele works in the front office. Although much of her time is spent on billing and financial work, she also schedules appointments, answers phones, and addresses insurance issues.
